One day… or day one?

How many times have you said the words, “One day…”?

One day I'll write that book.

One day I'll take that trip.

One day I'll learn how to do that.

One day I'll make the phone call, start the project, try something different, or finally do that thing I've been thinking about for years.

I think most of us have a collection of “one days” tucked away somewhere.

And there is nothing wrong with that.

Not everything has to happen today. There are seasons in our lives when responsibilities come first. There are times when the money isn't there, the opportunity isn't right, or perhaps we simply aren't ready.

Some dreams need to wait.

But I wonder if there are also times when “one day” quietly becomes a comfortable place to hide.

We keep waiting for the perfect time.

For more confidence.

For everything to fall neatly into place.

And while we're waiting, life keeps moving.

I have learned that day one doesn't necessarily arrive with trumpets sounding and a great big sign saying, THIS IS IT!

Sometimes day one begins with something very small.

A decision.

A conversation.

An email.

Opening the document.

Booking the ticket.

Saying yes.

Or perhaps saying no to something that has been holding us back.

Day one doesn't mean we know exactly where we're going. It doesn't mean we won't change direction, make mistakes, laugh at ourselves, or wonder occasionally what on earth we've gotten ourselves into.

It simply means we began.

Looking back over my own life, some of the things I am most grateful for began because eventually I stopped saying, “One day.”

I decided.

And perhaps that is the real difference between one day and day one.

One is a possibility.

The other is a beginning.

So maybe there is something sitting quietly in the back of your mind as you read this. Something you've been saying “one day” about for a very long time.

I'm not going to tell you that today has to be the day.

Only you know that.

But perhaps it is worth asking yourself:

Am I still waiting because the time isn't right…

Or am I waiting because beginning feels a little scary?

There is a difference.

And if you discover that you really are ready, you don't need to have the whole journey figured out.
