There Is More Beyond Where We Are Standing Now
We can be grateful for where we are without believing it is the only place we're ever meant to stand.
Life has a way of becoming familiar. We settle into routines, ways of thinking, things we know and things we believe we know. There is comfort in that. After all, experience has taught us a great deal.
But experience doesn't have to close the door to something new.
At 65, I know a lot more than I did at 25. I would certainly hope so! I have lived, learned, made mistakes, tried again, succeeded at some things, and discovered that other things simply weren't for me.
Yet I am still learning.
And perhaps one of the greatest things I have learned is that knowing a lot doesn't mean there is nothing left to learn.
There can still be another idea to consider, another skill to discover, another place to visit, another person to meet, another opportunity we hadn't expected, or simply another way of looking at something we thought we already understood.
Sometimes we don't need to completely change our lives.
We just need to be willing to look with different eyes.
Recently, I have found myself learning new things again. Some of them are completely new to me. Others are things I have been doing for years, but I am now seeing them from another perspective.
I don't accept every new idea simply because it is new. Age and experience have given me something valuable: the confidence to decide what feels right for me and what doesn't.
I can listen.
I can learn.
I can consider.
And I can still say, No, that's not for me.
Being open to growth doesn't mean we have to follow every new path that appears before us. It simply means we haven't decided that there are no paths left worth exploring.
Perhaps that is where age can become an advantage rather than a limitation.
We bring everything we have already learned with us.
Our experiences don't have to become walls around us. They can become the wisdom we carry as we look through the next open door.
There is a saying that you can't teach an old dog new tricks.
Well, this old dog isn't buying that. 😂
I am still curious. I am still learning. I am still willing to try something, get it wrong, laugh at myself, and have another go. And if something new speaks to me, I am willing to look at it with different eyes.
Because I don't believe becoming more belongs only to the young.
Nor do I believe that growth means we are dissatisfied with who we are today.
We can be grateful for where we are without believing it is the only place we're ever meant to stand.
There may be more beyond where you are standing now.
You don't have to know exactly what it is.
You don't have to race towards it.
Perhaps, for now, you only need to leave the door open.
What might you see differently if you were willing to look again?
